What Is the COVID-19 Virus?

COVID-19 is a type of coronavirus, a family of viruses that cause respiratory illness and other symptoms. These viruses are made of large, round molecules with spikes, which gives them the appearance of a crown or halo. 

Viruses fall into two categories: DNA and RNA. Coronavirus is a type of RNA virus, with the genetic material tightly packed at the center of the molecule, rather than on long strands of DNA. Other common RNA viruses include the flu, the common cold and HIV. 

How Does COVID-19 Infect the Body?

Because of its spiky appearance, COVID-19 is highly effective at attaching to healthy cells in the body. The spike proteins latch onto cells in the lungs at receptor sites for an enzyme called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). This allows the virus to release its genetic material inside the healthy cell and to produce new virus particles to continue infecting other healthy cells in the body. 

In COVID-19, nucleocapsid, membrane, envelope and spike proteins allow the virus to continue replicating itself in the body.
